Announcing Inaugural Redacted BINGO©!

February is Black History Month in the United States and it’s a time when individuals and organizations highlight the contributions of Black people to US History. They also use this month to inform the public about slavery and other forms of abuse that Black people experienced at the hands of White people and their systems for centuries.

“It’s a history communications scavenger hunt!”

“Excited for this latest venture to change the historical narratives about Black History!”

Unfortunately, perhaps unknown to those communicating about this history, they are using redacted grammar and language to do so, in particular the passive voice. To most, the passive voice is the tense of “professional, business writing” and it is a tense for objective communication. They are not telling a full story. And so, let’s work to change that via a fun game of awareness and education.

If you come across a lesson that includes redacted grammar and language on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, etc. and presentations, mark it on your Redacted BINGO card!
